Each single patient comes to the fertility clinic with their own history and their unique problems. Problem with a woman’s fallopian tubes is common. 10-15% of infertility issues are due to tubal block. Normal fallopian tubes cannot be seen in ultrasound scan as they are very small. Doctor may recommend that you undergo a test called a HysteroSalpingoGram / HysteroSalpingoGraphy / HSG.
What is a hysterosalpingogram?
An HSG is a special type of x-ray examination to check the patency of the fallopian tubes and also check the shape of the uterus.
When do doctor suggests HysteroSalpingoGraphy (HSG)?
What causes fallopian tubal blockage?
Scar tissue or adhesions from previous pelvic infections, surgery, endometriosis or Hydrosalphynx can block eggs from traveling freely through the fallopian tubes, making it very difficult or impossible to get pregnant.
When is the test done in relation to the period dates?
The test is usually done between days 5-10 of the menstrual cycle. This is to ensure that you are not pregnant when the HSG is performed. If you have irregular cycles or are not sure whether you are ovulating, doctor will perform a pregnancy test before the HSG.
How long the procedure does takes and when should i arrive at the centre?
It takes approximately 5 – 10 minutes to do the procedure. You have to arrive 30 -60 minutes prior to the procedure.
Q: Can i come alone for the procedure?
No. You have to bring a responsible person with you (relative / husband).
How is the HSG procedure done?
During the procedure, a thin catheter is inserted through the cervix into the uterus or a cannula is inserted into the cervix and a special radio-opaque contrast material dye is slowly injected. The dye allows the shape of the uterus and fallopian tubes to be seen. X rays are taken to capture the image of the uterus and the fallopian tubes.
If there is no blockage, the dye should flow freely through the uterus and fallopian tubes. If the dye is stopped at any point, it may indicate that a tubal blockage is present.
What to do if the fallopian tubes are blocked?
If the tubes are blocked, laparoscopy or a repeat HSG with tubal cannulation may be required. In special situations, IVF treatment may be advised.
Where to get HSG procedure done?
We perform HSG procedure at our centre with prior appointment only. You can call 8050075370 (between 8am to 4pm).
Does HSG procedure cause pain?
It is common to experience some mild to heavy cramping as the dye is pushed through the catheter. Pre-medication with a painkiller (to be taken 2 hours prior to the procedure) can help minimize discomfort. You may also want to take another dose later in the day after the procedure. If you are very anxious, HSG procedure can be performed under general anaesthesia.
Should patient take antibiotics before the procedure?
Doctor may suggest a course of antibiotics before your HSG test to prevent the possibility of infection.
What to expect after the HSG procedure?
After your HSG test, you should recover very quickly and be back to your normal activities by the next day.
a) A small amount of spotting is normal after an HSG test.
b) There can also be minimal leakage of the contrast dye, wearing a pad for the rest of the day will help protect your clothing.
c) There may be cramps during the day and we will prescribe pain killers.
d) Feelings of dizziness or vomiting sensation are also possible.
Can I come alone and drive back?
We advise women not to come alone for the procedure. It is always better to come with your husband or a relative. We advise you not to drive while going back after the procedure.
Should we take day off on the day of the procedure?
It is better to take a day off. HSG test is not a major procedure, some women find that cramping and spotting continues throughout the day. Feelings of dizziness or nausea are also possible.
When to contact the doctor if there are any problems after the procedure?
Contact the doctor if you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, vaginal foul smelly discharge or fever and should be investigated immediately.
Does a pregnancy chance improve after HSG procedure?
A small number of women find that they become pregnant naturally soon after their HSG procedure. This is probably that the flow of the dye dislodges minor blockage, freeing up the fallopian tube.
I am scared about the pain and the procedure. Can the procedure be done under anaesthesia?
Yes, it can be done under anaesthesia where you do not feel any pain. Please contact our staff and they will guide you.
Can I have sex after the HSG procedure?
You can have sex if there is no bleeding or pain, 2 days after the procedure. You can try for pregnancy this month
